How to Enable the FPS Counter on the Steam Deck

If you’re curious about how a game is performing, one of the best metrics is Frames Per Seconds (FPS). Having a high and consistent framerate will make your game feel smoother and more enjoyable to play.

The Steam Deck allows you to see your framerate in a little overlay in the upper left hand corner. You’ll have to enable to feature first, though. Thankfully, doing so is easy once you know where to look, and you can even do it while a game is running – here’s how:

On the Steam Deck Itself

  1. Press the ... button on the right side of the Steam Deck to open the Quick Action Menu.
  2. Navigate to the Performance menu, indicated by a Battery icon.
  3. Move the Slider to the right to both enable the FPS counter and adjust how it’s displayed.

While Using a Controller

The steps to enable the FPS counter on the Steam Deck while using a controller are the as shown in the sections above, but how you access the Quick Action Menu is different.

From a controller, simply hold down the Steam button (or Xbox button if using an Xbox controller) and press A. From there, follow the steps above to enable the FPS counter.

Accessing this menu may vary from controller to controller, so if the above isn’t working, try holding down just the Steam/Xbox/Middle button on your controller until a help menu appears. Which button combination you need to press to access the Quick Action Menu will be shown there.
